Got a number? Let a real person sanity-check it
A calculator is a starting point. A 60-second enquiry gets someone who handles declined and unusual deals to test it against your actual bank statements. No credit check when you first enquire.
What the numbers capture, and what they miss
On paper, a payment plan and a loan look like two ways of spreading the same debt. The calculator shows the dollars: the monthly hit to cash flow and the total cost of each path. What it cannot price is the pressure that comes with an open tax debt. The ATO can refuse a plan, cancel one that falls behind, issue director penalty notices that make directors personally liable for some unpaid amounts, and in some cases report larger overdue business tax debts to credit reporting bureaus. Those consequences are why many owners choose to clear the balance even when the plan looks cheaper.
When a payment plan is the better call
- The ATO has agreed to a plan you can comfortably keep alongside every new BAS.
- The debt is small relative to turnover and no other pressure is building.
- You are confident new obligations will be met on time from here on.
When clearing it with finance often makes sense
- A plan has been refused, defaulted or is too short for your cash flow.
- A director penalty notice has arrived, or you are worried one will.
- The tax debt is blocking other finance, supplier credit or a tender.
Our page on ATO tax debt loans covers how lenders assess these deals, and director penalty notice finance covers the urgent version. Talk to your accountant or tax agent about the tax side.

Questions about this tool
Does the ATO charge interest on a payment plan?
Generally, yes. The general interest charge usually keeps accruing on the outstanding balance while you pay it off. Check your ATO account or ask your tax agent for the amount relevant to your plan, and enter it here.
Why would anyone borrow to pay the ATO?
Because some costs are not just dollars. A refused or defaulted plan, a director penalty notice or the risk of the debt being reported to credit bureaus can hurt the business more than the cost of finance. Clearing the debt also frees up your relationship with the ATO for future BAS.
Is borrowing always the better option?
No. If the ATO will give you a plan you can comfortably keep, it may be cheaper. This calculator puts the two side by side using numbers you enter, so you can decide with your accountant.
Can I get a loan while I'm on a payment plan?
Often, yes. Many alternative lenders are comfortable with an ATO plan that is being met, and some loans are used to pay the plan out entirely.
