Quick answer

Bad credit business loans are offered by lenders who look past the credit score at what your business account shows now, why the credit problem happened and whether there is property or other security. Defaults, judgements and late payments are considered case by case. Recent, unexplained problems are harder; older, paid or explained ones are often workable.

Key points

  • Credit issues are weighed against current trading, not used as an automatic no
  • Paid and older defaults read far better than recent unpaid ones
  • Property security can carry the decision when credit is complicated
  • Avoid multiple applications; each can add an enquiry to your file

Why bad credit stops most applications

Most lenders do not read your credit file line by line. Their systems pull a score and a list of flags, and the rules do the rest. A default, a court judgement or a run of late payments can trigger an automatic decline before anyone looks at the business. That is efficient for the lender, and frustrating for an owner whose business is trading well today.

An alternative lender asks the questions the system skips: what happened, how long ago, has it been dealt with, and what does the business look like now?

What lenders actually weigh

Factor Reads better Reads worse
Age of the problem Two or more years ago In the last few months
Status Paid or settled Unpaid, still growing
Cause One-off event, explained Pattern with no explanation
Current banking Steady deposits, few dishonours Frequent overdrawn days
Security Property or strong assets Nothing behind the loan

Write down a short, honest explanation of each credit issue before you apply. A client who collapsed owing you money, a dispute with a telco that turned into a default, a marriage breakdown: these are ordinary business stories, and a lender who hears them up front can work with them.

Your options, from simplest to strongest

  1. Specialist unsecured lenders. Some cash flow lenders accept files with defaults if recent bank statements are healthy. Amounts are sized on turnover and terms are shorter. See unsecured business loans.
  2. Low doc facilities. If the credit issue sits alongside late tax returns, a low doc loan that relies on bank statements may still work.
  3. Property-secured loans. When credit problems are serious or recent, equity in a home or commercial property often makes the difference. Loans run anywhere from $20k to $5m and no valuation is required up front.
  4. A guarantor. A family member or business partner with property or a clean file can strengthen a borderline application.

Things that make it harder

  • Recent unpaid defaults that are still growing with fees.
  • Several new enquiries in the last few months from applications that went nowhere.
  • Existing short-term loans taking a big bite out of the account every day.
  • Unlodged BAS or tax returns, which leave lenders guessing about the true position.

Each of these can be worked around, but they all reduce options. If you can pay a small default before applying, it often helps more than its size suggests. Common situations we see

Owners who restarted after a failed business. Tradies with a default from an old phone contract. Directors whose company went through a rough patch with the ATO. Business owners whose credit was hit during a relationship breakdown. If one of these sounds familiar, the pages on borrowing after a default and business loans with a low credit score go deeper.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a business loan with a default?

Often, yes. Lenders consider how old the default is, whether it has been paid, how large it was and what your business account looks like now. A paid default from years ago with clean recent banking is a very different story from an unpaid one last month.

Will a bad credit loan cost more?

Usually. Lenders price for risk, so a complicated file generally costs more than a clean one. Property security can narrow that gap. Compare offers on total dollars repaid rather than any headline number.

Does my personal credit matter for a company loan?

Yes. Directors normally guarantee company loans, so lenders review the directors' personal credit files as well as the company's.

Can bad credit loans help rebuild my credit?

Comprehensive credit reporting records on-time repayments as well as problems, so a loan repaid as agreed can help your file over time.
