Quick answer

A low credit score does not automatically rule out a business loan. Scores summarise your credit file, but specialist lenders also look at your business bank statements, the reason for the loan and any security. Understanding what is pulling your score down, fixing what you can and choosing a lender that looks beyond the number are the keys.

Key points

  • Scores summarise your file; they are not the whole story
  • Each credit reporting body calculates its own score
  • Recent enquiries, defaults and late payments pull scores down
  • Specialist and property-secured lenders look beyond the score

What a score really measures

A credit score is a number produced by a credit reporting body from the information on your file: repayment history, defaults, judgements, the number and type of credit enquiries, and how long you have held credit. Each body uses its own model, which is why your score can differ between them. Lenders often set a minimum score for automatic approval, and anything below it is declined without anyone reading the file.

Common reasons scores drop

Cause Effect
Recent applications Several enquiries in a short period
Late payments Missed due dates on cards, loans or utilities
Defaults or judgements Serious negative events
Thin history Too little credit history to score highly
High limits Large unused limits on cards can concern some models

Practical steps

  1. Check your reports from each credit reporting body and look for errors. See credit file errors.
  2. Pause new applications. Every enquiry can pull the score further.
  3. Pay every account on time. Positive repayment history is now recorded and helps.
  4. Reduce unused limits on cards you do not need.
  5. Settle small defaults where you can.

Lenders who look beyond the number

Specialist unsecured lenders weigh your score alongside six to twelve months of bank statements. A business with a middling score but strong, steady deposits can still be funded. Property-secured lenders rely mainly on equity and the plan to repay, so a low score matters less. A secured business loan runs $20k to $5m without a valuation before approval.

An illustrative example

A gym owner’s score was dragged down by a run of applications for equipment finance during a busy expansion, most of which he did not proceed with. He had no defaults. A specialist lender reviewed his membership income through bank statements, accepted his explanation and funded new equipment on a single application.

What does not help

Paying for services that promise to remove correct information from your file rarely helps and can cost a lot. Correct listings stay for their set periods. Applying for many cards or loans to build history quickly also backfires, because each application can add an enquiry. Slow, steady improvement through on-time payments and fewer applications works better.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good credit score?

Each credit reporting body uses its own scale, so there is no single number. Your report shows where your score sits on that body's range.

Why is my score low if I have no defaults?

Many recent enquiries, late repayments, high limits relative to income or a thin credit history can all lower a score.

Can I improve my score quickly?

Some changes help within months, such as paying accounts on time and avoiding new applications. Defaults and judgements take longer to fade.

Do business lenders use my personal score?

Usually, because directors and owners guarantee business loans.
